Baptism

“The sacraments of Christian initiation—Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist—lay the foundations of every Christian life. Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit … and the door which gives access to the other sacraments." Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1212-1213.

Adults requiring Baptism must participate in the RCIA process. Children should be baptized as soon as possible. Children under the age of 7 do not require special classes. Children older than 7 years old must be enrolled in the Religious Education program and receive additional classes.

The Catholic Church requires that at least one of the parents be an active, practicing Catholic. The Godparents must be 16 years or older, and must have received all the sacraments of initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist). If godparents are a couple living together, they must be married in the Catholic Church. The godparents should be a male and a female.

Baptisms are celebrated once a month in English and three times a month in Spanish (pending approval). Arrangements must be made in advance and the family must be registered and contributing to the parish of St. Damien of Molokai for a least three months prior to the baptism.

Both the parents and godparents must attend one baptismal class. Classes are held in English, the last Tuesday of the month and the first Thursday of the month in Spanish. People interested in attending the class must register at the parish office. Call Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday to register (248-332-0283). The attendees must register two months in advance prior taking the class.
